“However many gigs you've been to, however many types of music you've seen, I guarantee you that nothing would have prepared you for Maria Trotter's performance on Belle Vue Island for MalvernRocks FestivalofMusic...

She's a harpist, and even though, after seeing artists like Chube and Cerys Hafana, I've seen the capabilities of a harp being used for genres other than classical and folk, I've not seen anything quite like this.

It would be wrong and particularly uncharitable to call her a covers artist, instead she is a master deconstructor, particularly of progressive rock, stripping songs back, putting them in the blender of her arrangement skills and unleashing them to your unsuspecting ears.

We get Marillion, Yes, Queen and many others and she doesn't go for the familiar either - I had to stretch my mind back a long way to remember the tracks she played from the first two especially.

And that's if you can identify what she's playing... You scratch your head wondering if she's playing what she announced, then a familiar melody line breaks through the arrangement and reorientates you.

The whole performance is quite amazing and delightfully out of the ordinary - very glad I caught this one.”
